Frisian Draughts

Netherlands · Friesland

Perhaps the most ruthless variant: captures are allowed diagonally, vertically and horizontally. No piece on the board is ever truly safe.

Rules

  • Captures may be diagonal, vertical or horizontal (plain moves stay diagonal).
  • Kings fly; a king counts as 1.5 men when comparing capture values.
  • The most 'valuable' chain must be played.
  • A king may move at most 3 times in a row if the player still has men.

About the game

Played seriously only in the Dutch province of Friesland, with its own world championship. Orthogonal captures make material counts deceptive: a seemingly safe wall can be shattered from the front.
